Tips on Pain Management

One of the biggest struggles that ABI survivors deal with is pain management. Even 16.5yrs post-injury, my body is still plagued with residual effects from my injuries that include headaches, messed up joints, and overall constant muscle tension and soreness. These things are exacerbated by too much or too little physical activity, too much emotional or psychological stress and general over-stimulation. But how are any of these things avoided? Stress is something that just naturally comes with living life.

Fortunately, I have learned that there are many things we can do to combat all types of stress and diminish the rate and intensity of the pain. I much prefer to go the natural route of “prevention” or treatment rather than using meds as there are many long term side effects of taking drugs. Among other things, they work by literally dulling the body’s senses – which might be more comfortable in the moment, but it totally defeats the purpose of your body trying tell you something. The more we depend on the effects of the drugs, the less we learn to hear and interpret the signs from our own body.

Having consulted several types of holistic practitioners, I have learned that their support is extremely beneficial in not only treating pain, but as a means of preventing pain altogether, supporting and strengthening your body to withstand the stresses of your day. Chiropractors, Massage Therapists, Cranial Sacral Therapists, Naturopaths and Osteopaths all have a similar focus as they attempt to support the body naturally and return it to its proper function (rather than dulling a symptom). This process of supporting ones body also becomes a personal pursuit as it includes eating foods that will optimize function and fulfilling other requirements like water, regular movement, strength and mobility training, sleep and good ol’ fresh air and sunlight. We each need to find our own balance of these things, however, by getting back to basics and giving your body what it needs, it will naturally move toward optimal health and wellness.
